Luanda – The Angolan former basketball player Ângelo Victoriano died in the early hours of Saturday, in Luanda, at the age of 56, victim of a prolonged illness.

The former captain of the National Team and 1º de Agosto suffered from diabetes and was admitted to the Military hospital, eventually passing away in the early hours of the morning.

The former winger was distinguished, in August 2023, by FIBA ​​World for the achievements achieved with the National Team in pavilions spread across Africa, Europe, Asia and America.

Ângelo became the second Angolan to deserve such a “FIBA Hall of Fame” distinction, after Jean-Jacques da Conceição, former center forward, also from 1º de Agosto, in 2013.

He is the only African player to have won eight FIBA ​​African championships, surpassing Jean-Jacques da Conceição and Carlos Almeida, both with seven titles each.

Angelo Monteiro dos Santos Vitoriano, was born in Bairro Marçal, in Luanda, on February 8, 1968.

He began his sporting career in 1982, at the age of 14. He transferred to Petro de Luanda at 16, having been called up to the junior National Team, aiming for the African Cup of Nations, in Mozambique.

During his career, the former winger won four national champion titles for the “Tricolores”, six for the “Militários” of Rio Seco, one for the “Aviadores” and the same number for Queluz of Portugal.

By 1.º de Agosto, he also won three trophies from African clubs, while with the National Senior Team he won eight African titles (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005).

He made his debut at the World Cup in Argentina in 1990, followed by appearances in editions held in Canada (1994) and the United States (1998).

 Ângelo Victoriano also competed in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​Spain, in 1992, Atlanta, USA (1996), Sydney, Australia (2000) and Greece, Athens (2004).

In addition to being an athlete, in 2009, Ângelo served as assistant coach at 1.º de Agosto, where he was national champion. MC/DOJ
