Angolan referee debuts at  under-17 basketball World Cup

Huambo - Angola international referee, Cláudio Anderson Eiuba, has been elected by FIBA to referee, for the first time, the U-17 world women's basketball championship to take place in Mexico on July 13 to 21.

The information was disclosed in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) website, which mentions the 37-year-old Angolan from Huambo province as one of the 28 referees nominated for the event.

Among the 28 elected, in addition to the Angolan international, the final phase of the competition includes two other referrers from Uganda and South Africa.

Speaking to ANGOP, judge Cláudio Anderson Eiuba said he was thrilled and happy to be appointed as referee for the U-17 Women's Basketball World Cup, as it had been a long-held dream of his.

He emphasized that this is the result of the recognition of the hard work he has put in, crowned by the good performances that Angolan referees have shown on the continent.

The aim, he emphasized, is to represent the African continent and Angola in particular in a dignified manner.

In Mexico, the U-17 women's basketball World Cup will be played in the cities of Irapuato and Leon.

The competition will feature 16 teams, namely Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Croatia, Egypt, Spain, the United States of America, France, Finland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Mali, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Professional background

 A former player for Petro do Huambo at youth level, Cláudio Anderson Eiuba, began his career as a referee in 2006 after being unable to continue as an athlete.

In 2010 he made his debut as a basketball referee at the national youth and cadet championships.

In 2016 he received the first honor of his career, as the best referee in the National Senior Men's Basketball Championship (BIC BASKET) and the following year (2017) he reached the category of international referee, with a record of participation in more than 20 competitions.

He made his debut as an international referee in 2018 at the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) games in São Tomé and Príncipe.

In the same year he refereed at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) games in Botswana, the men's under-16 Afrobasket in Cape Verde, the women's African Champions League in Angola and the 2019 World Cup qualifying round in Senegal.

In 2019, he took part in the African Women's Championship in Egypt, and in 2021, he wa a referee the Afrobasket Senior Women's Championship in Cameroon, the African Basketball League (BALL) qualifier in South Africa, as well as the Afro basket Senior Men's Championship qualifier in Tunisia and Rwanda.

In 2022, he was one of the referrers at the BALL 2023 qualifier, held in Senegal and Tanzania, and for the qualifiers for the senior men's World Cup in China, whose matches were played in Angola, Egypt and Senegal.

He took part this year, in the women's Afrobasket in Rwanda, BALL 2023 in Senegal and the qualifications for the France-2024 Olympic Games in Nigeria.  ZZN/JSV/ALH/DAN
