Luanda - The National Judo Team hold the first position in the African OPEN in judo, junior category, which takes place in the capital city, Luanda, after winning 36 medals.

The national team won 11 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals.

Judokas Santos Sebastião (-81kg), Josué Fernando (-60kg), Marcelina da Conceição (-52), Eldimira Segunda (-48kg), Olga Bento (-60kg), Yola Piedade (-57kg) and Cornélio Chimbinda (-66kg) won the gold medals.

Santos Sebastião, who renewed his champion title, told ANGOP that he intends to win this year's senior championship, something that eluded him in the last edition.

For his part, Josué Fernando (-60kg) said that Angolan judo is on a good path and the federation has done hard work to promote the sport at national level, highlighting that it has been a good experience competing with international athletes.

In women's, the highlight goes to Eldimira Segunda (-48kg), who also reclaimed the title of continental OPEN champion in juniors, by overcoming compatriot Vânia Gabriel.

Angola also shone with Olga Bento (-70kg), overcoming Neo Nagampe, from Botswana, while Marcelina da Conceição won gold, overtaking Beumara Pinha, in the (-52kg) category.

The LUANDA AFRICAN OPEN 2024 TOURNAMENT runs until Sunday, at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion.
