Luanda - The Ombudsperson, Florbela Rocha Araújo, proposed updating Law 5/98 of 19 June (Environmental Basic Law) to adapt to the existing International Conventions.
This vision was shared on Friday at the III National Conference on Environmental Law and Natural Resources, held by the Faculty of Law of the Agostinho Neto University, to celebrate National Environment Day, to be celebrated on January 31st.
In her dissertation on the “Role of the Ombudsman in Defending Citizens' Rights in Relation to the Environment”, Florbela Araújo presented the ombudsman's duties and powers, its legal framework and its role in defending the right to the environment, as set out in the article 39 of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola.
Florbela Araújo illustrated, on the other hand, how the Ombudsman within the scope of his judiciary intervenes to resolve conflicts over the environment.
She also referred to the own initiative processes that the institution is aware of, through complaints, and how the recommendations issued have had an effect, especially those directed to ministerial departments and the provincial government.
The conference featured the intervention of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, André Victor, representatives of ministerial departments, academics and members of civil society.
The conference took place on Friday, January 26th, as it is the date on which “Environmental Education” is reflected around the world. OHA/DOJ
