Cuito - Angola produced 622,804 tonnes of cereals during 2022/2023 agricultural season, the National Grains Institute director Maria Garção said Friday in Cuito, central Bié province.
Maria Garção mentioned the products such as wheat, rice, maize and soya, among the cereals produced in that period.
She said there was a considerable increase in relation to last season, but did not release comparative figures.
In her speech delivered at the 1st International Cereals and Grains Conference, opened Thursday in Bié province, the manager predicted high levels of production in the coming campaigns.
In order to boost the production, the director defended, among other things, the need for the State to provide more funding and subsidise fuel in the agricultural sector to encourage producers and ensure food security.
Addressing a topic on "the importance of cereals and grains in the fight against poverty and food security", the director recognised the government's efforts to provide funding to farmers and the recent approval of more support for national producers.
On the other hand, she called for the use of modern technology in this sector of agriculture, as well as more assistance for national producers in terms of agricultural inputs. EC/PLB/DAN/NIC
