DAKAR -- Senegalese President Macky Sall on Wednesday called on African leaders "to find solutions" to the situation of food insecurity plaguing the continent.
Speaking here at the opening of the second edition of the Dakar Summit on Food Sovereignty, Sall said Africa is at the crossroads and faces an unprecedented crisis.
The Senegalese president said the issue of food sovereignty has become an emergency of the utmost importance at a time when African countries "are suffering the full force of the combined effect of climate change, pandemic and a major war."
Faced with this situation, Africa must learn to "feed itself and help feed the world because the continent has the potential," Sall added.
While stating Africa's resolve "to overcome the obstacles to meet the challenges of the hour," he invited bilateral and multilateral partners to support the momentum set in motion by Africans.
The three-day Dakar Summit on Food Sovereignty, starting on Wednesday, is co-organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Senegal.
A total of 16 presidents, three prime ministers and two vice presidents took part in the opening ceremony of this summit themed "Feeding Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience". Also dubbed "Dakar 2 Summit", the event aims to join the dynamic of Africa's solutions, which draws on its immense potential to feed itself and the world.
