Windhoek - The President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, died in the early hours of Sunday due to illness at the age of 82, the Presidency of the Republic announced.
Geingob was admitted to Lady Pohama Hospital in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, after being diagnosed with cancer.
However, the cause of death was not announced in the statement from the presidential office posted on the X network, formerly Twitter.
A regular medical examination carried out at the beginning of January this year revealed that the head of state had cancer, according to his office, which did not provide details about his condition.
'The Namibian nation has lost an illustrious servant of the people, an icon of the liberation struggle, the main architect of our Constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house', stated the acting President and current Vice-President, Nangolo Mbumba.
Geingob was the third President of Namibia, a country that became independent in the 1990s, when it was no longer politically controlled by South Africa.
Prime Minister of Namibia twice (1990-2002 and 2012-2015, Geingob came to power in March 2015, before being re-elected in 2019.
While prime minister in 2014, Geingob revealed that he had survived prostate cancer.
The President had accepted an offer from scientists and medical professionals in Los Angeles, California, to undergo a new therapy to treat cancer cells, the President said in a statement last Wednesday.JM/DOJ
